The China-designed, built and operated Shen Kuo Research Vessel first docked in Hong Kong last week. This 2,200-ton small-waterline surface catamaran vessel has been carrying out over 30 oceanic research missions since 2018, visiting the world's deepest trench, the Mariana Trench on several occasions to conduct deep-sea exploration missions. To arouse interest in marine science within the broader community, HKBU Department of Biology Associate Head Professor Qiu Jianwen accepted an invitation by the Yew Chung Yew Wah Education network to be one of two speakers of a public seminar entitled ‘Explore the Unexplored - Deep-Sea Exploration on Discovery of New Marine Species’ on 28 November 2023. The seminar was given face-to-face at Yew Chung’s Kowloon Tong campus to more than 300 students from 13 local high schools and online to a large audience of 10 schools in the Yew Chung Yew Wah Education network.
Furthermore, HKBU Department of Biology, led by Dr Veronica Chan, organized a visit on 3 December 2024 to the Shen Kuo Research Vessel to witness the advancements and accomplishments of our country’s marine science.
