HKBU Science Festival enables 1,200 secondary and primary school students to discover big data in daily life

The Faculty of Science of HKBU held today (6 July) its Open Day, one of a host of activities in the 2017 Science Festival. Around 1,200 participants from 23 secondary schools and 6 primary schools attended. The theme of this year’s Science Festival was “Small World, Big Data”, seeking to arouse school students’ awareness of the important role that big data plays in daily life and to encourage them to discover more applications for these enormous and complex data sets..


Activities included an array of talks introducing the notion of big data, artificial intelligence (AI) and techniques of simple investment for secondary school students; a chemistry magic show; laboratories and low-carbon campus tours; exhibitions and the Data Treasure Hunt Competition.


This competition required senior secondary school participants to collect and analyse data and present their findings by visualising the data. The 12 competing teams joined two training workshops organised by the Department of Computer Science of HKBU in March to learn about data analysis and using visualisation software. The teams presented their findings during the competition on the Open Day. The championship and second runner-up titles went to teams from The Chinese Foundation Secondary School. The first runner-up was St Francis’ Canossian College.
