On 6 and 13 August 2026, the Department of Biology organised the 'Conserving Marine Biodiversity: Deep Sea Adventure' workshop. The workshop engaged more than 50 local and non-local primary and secondary students and their families, providing them with an enriching opportunity to explore the mysterious world of deep sea and to understand the importance of conserving marine biodiversity.
The workshop began with an engaging seminar by Dr Veronica CHAN and was supported by scientific officers and student volunteers. Participants then embarked on guided site visits to several state-of-the-art laboratories within the Department of Biology, where they gained unique insights into the scientific research process as well as marine life studies. A particular highlight was the hands-on experience with deep-sea marine specimens collected from the South China Sea by the research team of Prof Jianwen QIU. Students and their families explored remarkable examples of deep-sea adaptation and enjoyed the unique opportunity to discuss Prof QIU’s fascinating research experiences with him directly.
To further enrich the experience, the workshop featured immersive VR marine games and AR cards that allowed participants to virtually 'dive' into the depths of the ocean, bringing the extreme environments and remarkable creatures of the deep sea vividly to life. These activities fostered curiosity and a sense of adventure, inspiring participants to ask questions and engage deeply with marine science.
Last but not least, the Deep Sea Adventure Workshop exemplifies the Department’s ongoing efforts to promote science education and the conservation of marine ecosystems.
